TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE: IBIBIO TRIBE, AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA

By Dr Cheryl Udomessien Posted on July 11, 2020November 8, 2020 2 min read 9816 views

Traditional marriage between the bride, Nsikan Edem Okon and the groom, Elijah Martin Bassey.
Name as a Couple: Mr. & Mrs. Elijah Bassey
Bride’s Tribe: Ibibio
L.G.A./State of Origin: Uyo L.G.A./ Akwa Ibom
Groom’s Tribe: Ibibio
L.G.A./State of Origin: Uruan L.G.A./ Akwa Ibom

Here’s what the beautiful bride has to say about their happy traditional marriage day:

“The colourful event took place at my family compound in Uyo L.G.A. of Akwa Ibom State. I was beautifully dressed in an Indian George with “Gele” (head-tie style). Upon the arrival of the groom and his family, they were introduced to a display of our native foods (Udia Ibenge): Edikan ikong, Atama, Oto mboro, Ekpang nkukwo, Afia efere, Edesi, Editan, Eben, Obukpa, Isip eyop, Etikke etc.

The aim was to assure the groom and his entourage that the bride is skillful in cooking and she will satisfy her husband.

After enjoying the meals, my husband and his entourage were ushered into the main venue, where he went round to greet the elders and parents that were present before proceeding to his seat.

I then danced out, accompanied by my friends, to meet my husband who was desirous of my arrival.

Finally, my husband and I presented ourselves to our parents for their acceptance and blessings. We were each given a bottle of wine to pop and drink with our parents after their acceptance. Both families then joined hands together to pray for us.

Marriage is sweet when you are with the right person.”

Lovely couple. “Every marriage is unique! There’s no formula! figure things out and work out your own marriage” is a very good message one can give to any couple. This is because a lot of couples try to fashion their marriage like some other couples’ forgetting the fact that what works for couple A may not work for couple B.
Keep on the good work ma. God’s Grace.

There’s a big smile on my face “rai” now😊😂. This was fun to read and lovely. I was busy ticking off items on the udia ibenge list that I know. Hahahaha.
Loved to see our “Ibibio” TM repped so beautifully.
Many happy wishes for the couple.
