Traditional Marriage (TM), Okun tribe, Mopa-Muro L.G.A., Kogi state.

Today’s Rainbow Post features the Traditional Marriage (TM) ceremony/ Engagement (as it is popularly called in this tribe) of Miss Toluwani Ayodele and Dr Promise Jacob according to the culture and traditions of the bride’s tribe, Okun tribe, Mopa-Muro L.G.A., Kogi state.

NAMES BEFORE WEDDING
Bride: Miss Toluwani Oluwabusayo Ayodele
Groom: Dr Promise Jacob

NAMES AFTER WEDDING
Dr and Mrs Promise Jacob

TRIBE and STATE OF ORIGIN
Bride: Okun ( yoruba speaking part of Kogi State) and Kogi respectively.
Groom: Annang and Akwa Ibom respectively.

Here’s what the bride wrote about her special day:

Our journey as a married couple started with an engagement ceremony, i.e. the TM, which is usually hosted by the bride’s family (in my culture). Two masters of ceremonies usually coordinate the engagement. They are called ”Alaga Ijoko”, the one who represents the bride’s family and “Alaga Iduro”, the one who represents the groom’s family. They are very important personalities who conduct “engagement ceremonies/TMs”.

The alagas started the ceremony by welcoming both families.
Afterwards, the groom and his friends were ushered in by the alaga’s, and they were made to prostrate before the bride’s family. After all prostrating had been done, the groom took pictures with both families.

Furthermore, I was covered with a veil all over my head and upper body. With it, I danced along sides my friends until we arrived at the ceremony arena, being ushered in by the alaga.

Afterwards, I was made to dance toward my parents to kneel down on a woven mat placed on the ground in front of them. When I knelt, they prayed for me.

After the prayers were said, I took some pictures with my parents and I also carried out the same acts towards my in-laws.

Lastly, I went to sit beside my husband-to-be and he gently removed the veil over my head as requested by the alagas.

The engagement items were then requested by the alagas to be displayed publicly.

After every inspection, the cake for the ceremony was cut and the pastor prayed for us.

That’s how we got married traditionally
